Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario

CHEO’s Mission – Making a difference in the lives of children, youth, and families (listening – caring – discovering – learning – advocating)

The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario is a tertiary care hospital providing training in Pediatric Neurosurgery.  The hospital has 167 inpatient beds of which 20 are in the neonatal intensive care unit, 10 in the pediatric intensive care unit, 112 ward beds (27 being primarily for surgery and 6 for rehabilitation), and 25 for Psychiatry. There are no limitations on the number of beds designated to Neurosurgery, and admissions are determined by the number of beds available at the hospital at any one time. At present, the Neurosurgery inpatients are under the care of two full time Pediatric Neurosurgeons.  There is consultant experience from Pediatrics, Neontatal Medicine, Neurology, Oncology and other surgical subspecialties allowing residents rotating at CHEO to get excellent exposure to Pediatric Neurosurgical pathologies.  There is an excellent relationship both with Pediatrics and Pediatric Neurology.  There are rounds that residents are encouraged to attend in Pediatrics, Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Epilepsy, Neurooncology, Neuropathology and Neuroradiology.  Whole day Neurosurgery clinics occur twice a week, as well as a Concussion Research Project clinic on Friday afternoons.  This allows the resident to have a diverse exposure to both common and uncommon Pediatric Neurosurgical issues and their management.
